Grand Central Art Center has a new director and chief curator

Janice DeLoof announced that Grand Central Art Center has a new director and chief curator. He is John Spiak. Mr. Spiak has a very impressive resume and should prove to be a strong voice for the arts in Orange County. Janice DeLoof has presented a proposal to the new director for another Stigma Show. Check with her for more information.

David Michael Lee is the new curator for Coastline Community Gallery in Huntington Beach. His first exhibit, Visual Integrity, was co-curated with Shea Mayberry. SCA member Janet Adams wass included in the mixed media exhibit.

Ceramic Workshop Success

JUROR MARK CHAMBERLAIN
In 1973, Mark Chamberlain co-founded and still operates BC Space Gallery & Photographic Art Services.

For over 35 years, Mark Chamberlain has used photography and other art vehicles for social and political commentary. Artist, author, educator, ardent environmentalist, and self-proclaimed arteologist, his work has brought widespread attention to regional issues and global concerns. Most notable was The Tell, a collaborative non-profit public art project in Laguna Canyon in 1989. This 636-foot-long photographic mural, created with art partner Jerry Burchfield, served as the focal point and catalyst for the defense of the canyon and ultimately drew thousands of people to the Laguna Canyon site, national attention to the issues, and facilitated the public purchase of that land for preservation.

Other work includes Dubuque Passages, an intimate b/w documentary of Chamberlain’s hometown region created over a 10 year period; Future Fossils, a similar endeavor in larger scale color incorporating images collected in California over another 25 year plus period; and Looking for 2001, an ongoing companion color series of photographic images reflecting on our evolution into the 21st Century. Current activities include the long-term documentation of the El Toro Marine Base as it undergoes the transition from military air base to regional park and an ongoing video & still documentation of the Mississippi River and its byways, and a video history of the Artist Elders of Laguna Beach.

Along with an extensive exhibition record, Mark Chamberlain’s work is included in numerous public & private collections, including the Laguna Art Museum, Orange County Museum of Art, the University of Dubuque, the Polaroid Collection, and the Cincinnati Museum of Art.

BC exhibitions include the controversial & highly acclaimed Pretty Lies/Dirty Truth show, which addressed issues of war & peace in our time; My Father’s Party is Busted!; Banned & Barred which dealt with the practice of censorship in art; Water Works, addressing concerns of water use, misuse, and abuse; and Urbanscapes, a lyrical depiction of man’s impact and legacy on our planet.

The Emigrant Trail

The City of Temecula will have a Dedication Ceremony for the new Civic Center on December 9th at 4:00 PM.
Address: 41000 main Street Old Town Temecula.

The new $73 million Civic Center includes a 95,000-square-foot Spanish Colonial-style City Hall, a three-story parking garage and a town square.
I'm very thankful to be awarded to do "The Emigrant Trail" mosaic mural and to be part of this project. The mural will be finally revealed. It took one year to finish. I learned a lot about the history of Temecula and the significance of the Emigrant Trail in the City's growth from 1847 to 1858.

Janet Adams has just received (by mail) the Juror's Award for her piece HEDWIG in the exhibit at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art - a complete surprise since she could not attend the opening!
The title of the exhibit is Animal Narratives, featuring visual ideas about animals in literature. Janet's piece was the white owl in the Harry Potter series.

ART4KIDS Benefit

The benefit for ART4KIDS - our SCA charity for 2010 - will be held during our SCA exhibit opening this Saturday, Nov. 13th, in Pomona. For any donation, participants will make a beaded mountain sage project which can be hung indoors or in a garden, or given to a friend.

Ages 4 to adults have enjoyed making this aromatic project! Please plan on joining in to help ART4KIDS give the gift of art materials to as many children as possible. SCA member Pam Schader founded this amazing organization nine years ago. THANK YOU!

Marilyn Ellis to lecture at OCCCA Saturday

San Juan Capistrano Ridge Walk & 10K Run

I wanted to let you know about an event in San Juan Capistrano which is looking for painters.

This is the second year the Rotary club has sponsored a Ridge Walk on Oct 3 to promote the trail system in SJC. Last year they had hundreds of people out walking one of our trail areas. Community groups set up promotional booths at the trail head and rotary club members & scout groups man water stations at points along the trail.

This will be an annual event.

The Rotary Club would love to have some painters out along the trail and there is space available at the trail head to show the work at the end of the event. They can take people out and back in ATVs so the painters don't have to hike a mile or so to the views.

Suki is OC Outstanding Artist of the Year

Arts Orange County has announced that our esteemed SCA member, Suki Berg, has been chosen as Orange County outstanding artist of the year. This special honor recognizes her long career and cultural contributions as an artist and supporter of the arts in Orange County. Suki continues her art making in painting and printmaking, is a member of Orange County Center for Comtemporary Art (OCCCA) and a life member of Southern California Artists, Inc. We congradulate her on receiving this recognition.

As published in an article by Richard Chang in the Orange County Register dated Tuesday, October 7, Suki is recognized for her cultural achievement in visual art. She is honored with an "Oscar-like" statue, given at an awards ceremony held at the Balboa Club last week.

Per the OCR article, "It's great to be validated this way," Berg, 91, said in an interview. "It's hard to describe the feeling. I'm a very happy person. I'm very satisfied."
In April, Berg had a retrospective covering more than six decades of creative work at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Ana.

SCA at "A Night of Indulgence"

SCA members volunteered to show and sell their art at the "A Night of Indulgence" charity benefit hosted by the Center Club of Orange County on September 26. Their fund raising was for three charities: The Muscular Dystrophy Association, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the Employee Partners Care Foundation. Guests paid $100 entry and could bid on art works donated by selected artists in a silent auction as well as buy artists' works. The forty artists selling work also donated 20% of sales.

Although attendance was lower than expected (possibly because of the concurrence with the first presidential debate on TV). But the food and wine tasting were lavish during the evening, and we artists are known for our indulgence. And the artists and their guests had complimentary entry. Each artist had a show space of about ten feet with show tables and easels provided.

In the several photos attached are SCA members Paula Van der Lans with guest Dave Silva, Eileen Anderson with artist friend Sherry Talley, Marilyn Ellis with friend Lorenzo, and Thom Wright with club friend Henry Segerstrom.

Our evening was enjoyable if not personally successful. Several difficulties did arise, including poor lighting, little to no seating, some over-indulgence and a low level of art sales for everyone. Maybe the economy is in trouble, and that always hits the art market. But thanks to all participating and better luck at the next event.

This message is a reminder to pick up your work September 16th. Pat Sparkhul will be there de installing first thing when the bank opens. It will be very helpful if you get there as early as possible. Please note, for those who cannot be present to pick up their work must make other arrangements. Any work left after the 16th over will have no protection. Pat is hanging another show that very day.We had a really good show this year. I have sent quite a few art enthusiasts to see it, including a group from the Sales and Rental Gallery of LACMA.

Eileen and Carole collaborated on their piece for the recent Coastline Community College show "Drawing Extended. Using charcoal and graphite we drew each others bodies. Lying on the floor we created our composition and then each drew outlines of the other. We feel the collaboration was a challenging and very positive experience. The "Sisters" series is the beginning of more collaborative pieces. Congratulations to Jay Sagen for his ability to create a stunning show.

Coastline Gallery "Extended Drawing" Show

SCA artists participated in the Coastline Gallery "Drawing" show which opened on Friday, July 11. A well attended reception for a well presented show that covered a wide range of drawing media and experimental approaches. With all the crowd noise it usually is difficult to focus on the art works, but in this show there are many outstanding works. Our congradulations to the show curator, Jay Sagen, for this breadth and depth in drawing. Photos of three of my favorite SCA artists with pieces are Marilou Hogeboom, Marilyn Ellis and Karen Feuer-Schwager.

just juried an art exhibit for artists who are blind.
some are legally blind and can see a minute amount & use technology to enhance their sight, but a couple of the 154 artists were totally blind.
someone asked me,
“WHY WOULD THEY DO ART IF THEY CAN’T SEE IT?”

wow, that speaks volumes; and the answer right there in the question.
it is the doing, the doing, the process.
it is called CREATIVE PROCESS. PROCESS.
imagine the joy we would have if we DID this without the infernal habit of looking at it!
if it was for the expression, not for the product.
no criterion. no judging, editing, critique.

the healing is in the process.
the just being with it.
the Tao.
the core of life.
THE WAY TO DO IS TO BE.

we are in the ultimate relationship; that is the one with ourselves.
the one we are with in our studio when everyone else leaves. The one waiting, calling from our hearts. the one who dies when we refuse that small voice.

The show is quite impressive on the second floor rotunda and can be seen from the first floor. The bank has added spot lighting on all the walls, and it is effective and inviting. Many good comments on the art work were received from attending guests at the opening. My favorite was that our art "is not the regular sort of art that is mostly shown in Laguna."

"SCA Banks on Art" will continue its show at Wells Fargo Bank through the summer and ends on September 14. Many thanks to all who have contributed and made this event happen.

Art Review – HBAL Art Exhibition

As art groups go, the Huntington Beach Art League is gigantic, currently with more than 250 members. So this year’s show at the HB Central Library is a blockbuster in size and diversity. Awards and ribbons are given in six categories – oil and acrylics (more acrylics now than oils), mixed media (anything goes), watercolor (largest group), pastel and drawing (mostly pastel, drawing is passé), sculpture (smallest number of works), photography (the reality stuff), digital photography (processed anything goes). Sadly, as in my case, no categories or ribbons for abstract art. I overheard someone say that religious art and abstracts should be excluded as an affront to esthetics.
My favorite piece in the show is a nose-on close-up of a bulldog, an oversized sleeping hulk ready to slip off the canvas. Alas again, it won no prizes. But I had the opportunity to talk with the artist, who is an HBAL member and a long time nude model for all the local colleges and universities. She confessed to me that she did the work from a photograph, which is an unforgivable sin to life drawing models. The judges must have known that bulldogs do not pose nose-on.
You may suspect that this review is biased by my concern for the non-awarded artworks, especially for my own abstract. However, for a library show where public taste is a deciding factor, I have to agree that tradition and standards like depictions of small children and landscapes with barns deserve to be awarded, and these are in accordance with community demographics, taste and propriety. Thus, this show is a must-see at the library level and is inoffensive to no one.

SCA Art Critique at April Meeting

In keeping with the SCA mission to promote the development and education of its artists, our April meeting was centered on an informal and constructive art critique of members' work. Nine members presented work for review by the group: Karen Feuer-Schwager, Marilou Hogeboom, Ellen Rose, Desiree Engel, Marilyn Ellis, Tieko Horita and new member Ladan Badaradan. About ten minutes were given to each member. Works were generally in progress rather than finished pieces. The group followed guidelines for constructive criticism that responds to the artists direction and intent in the work. The positive comments after the meeting were that this program is beneficial for all attendees and that it helps to gain feedback and see one's work through the eyes of others. It doesn’t take much thought to recognize that one’s art does not appeal to everybody. In fact, so the expression goes, it usually doesn’t . . . So we are continuously on the cusp of making art, art that is thoughtful and has depth as well as color and design. Well, what does it take to be an artist? Thus on my own quest, and in reading In The Making by Linda Weintraub, concerning about 100 strategies artists take in making art, I gleaned ten questions in considering one’s processes and strategy for art. I hope to elaborate on these questions in future writings.

What are your research activities?
What levels of appreciation are considered in making art?
What are your internal sources of inspiration?
What are your external sources of inspiration?

Michael Asher at SMMoA

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Santa Monica Museum of Art at its location at Bergamont Station in Santa Monica, LA artist Michael Asher was selected for an installation show to capture the essence of the past 37 exhibitions that span the ten years. Instead of referencing the art content of these shows, he has chosen his own conceptualist approach that accumulates the designs of the temporary walls installed for the shows. He has installed aluminum and wooden stud walls in the exhibition space that adds together all of these floor designs. Of course they stack together and intersect at odd points and angles. The result is a maze of studded structure that the public is invited to explore. Despite the many sharp edges, exposed floor braces, and a labryrinth of walls without any entry or exit, the public comes to see and experience.
Remember being a kid at about ten years old, and how we used to explore construction sites after hours, walking through the open studded walls, the smells, the thrill and the mystery of architecture in the making. None of that is in this show, however. Instead, there are closed obstructions of studded walls in all directions, requiring some risk-taking to wander through, although that is all there is to do. Even before entering, you have to sign a no-liability agreement. The first room at the entry has the 37 floor designs with dates and show titles. So what is it all about? No art, no architecture, just an accumulation of temporary studded walls.
Squeezing oneself between the studs, again and again, with chaotic sameness in all directions, one eventually begins to ask this question, what is the point? How is this art? What is this art-installation experience? How do the 37 cutting-edge exhibitions add up to this? My own take dawns after a while, that Michael Asher has many meanings and purposes for this work. Central to all of them is its meaning itself. The dearth of esthetic content engenders a response about the why of it all. What are art museums for, and why do so many people come to them? And what is art for? What are these things – art, beauty, culture, and how does art capture and communicate these qualities? Come and see.

WELLS FARGO BANK SHOW

To follow up on our SCA show opportunities for this summer, the Wells Fargo Bank Show is currently our only planned event. Our previous plans for a show at Chapman U. have been withdrawn by the school. Accordingly, any additional SCA members who would like to show this summer at Wells Fargo Bank should send an E-Mail expressing their interest to Karen Feuer-Schwager. So far there are only 14 members who have signed up, and many more can be accomodated. The next SCA meeting on April 12 will include a discussion for show plans.

In our March meeting I announced that SCA will no longer have annual exhibitions at Chapman University, that the fine arts department has been reorganized and their gallery is fully booked for the year by its own activities. We do have the Wells Fargo Bank show planned for the summer, but only 13 members have commited to this show so far. To replace the Chapman show, we asked members to pursue new venues. Also, we had significant criticism in last year's survey about the lack of public response to the Chapman show.

So far, we have two offers for new venues. First, SCA member Jay Sagen, who also heads the Coastline art department and art gallery, suggested a possible juried show for a small number of SCA members for a show in July. The show may require several art works, and a themed show is a possibility. Gallery sitting may be required also. We are coordinating with him during this planning period and will discuss this at our next SCA meeting on April 12.

Our second opportunity is offered by SCA member Desiree Engel, who is also with the Gallery 57 Underground located in the Arts Colony of Pomona. This free-of-charge offer is for a one month show of SCA members during July, because of a recent cancellation. This basement level gallery is 2000 sq. ft. and can show 40-50 wall pieces plus ample space for sculptures, so that a full membership show could be held. An adjacent small room could host an art auction for our charity fund raiser (see photos attached). However, the greater driving distance from most members located in Orange County may be an obstacle. Volunteers are also needed for gallery sitting on Friday/Saturday/Sunday during the month. We also need an SCA volunteer for Exhibition chairperson to respond by next week (Monday, March 24). All SCA members who would like to participate and volunteer to support this show, please E-Mail SCA president Thom Wright, so that we would commit to this opportunity with a sufficient show of interest.

EXPERIMENTAL CAL ART SINCE THE 60’S

One of the current exhibitions at OCMA presents an assemblage of art historical artworks made in California since the 1960’s. All the last fifty years of art movements are there in some example piece – pop, environmental, photography, video/film, light, installation, performance, conceptual, environmental, life as art, and some of the more recent esthetics using new materials and processes. The side text offers substantial documentation and description, enough to emphasize the experimental aspect as well as touch on its classification. On the whole this is good art history with proof that it was made in California, although never mentioning what is really innovative to California.

For the older public who lived those years, it’s a pleasant sentimental journey. However, most of the older work looks old and faded. The risk taking was daring to the point of using non-permanent materials, so that the immediacy of the art isn’t quite there any more. No Caravaggio’s, only Warhols as our legacy.

My favorite art in the show is processed sheets of glass by Kim Abeles. It combines concept, processes, scale and presentation that is inspiring and somewhat scary. That and the show on the other side of the museum are sufficient to recommend a visit.

Obsessive/Compulsive

Have you ever wondered, “Where do they come up with that nonsense for an art theme?” In this age of the Postmodern, anything goes, so it is said. Life is an experiment, where all esthetics are valid, versus the top-down dictum that this year’s fad is neo-minimalist excesses, for instance. So I am a little skeptical about the Huntington Beach Art Center’s upcoming opening show, “Obsessive/Compulsive”, which opens Friday, March 7, at 7 pm. The artists “explore the definition of obsession as a persistent, disturbing, preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling.” Isn’t that what most art is about? And how can that be a subject apart from its meaning, or why does the unorthodox point of view become the subject. If you are as confused by this double-talk art as you are unsure that it can inspire art, I’ll see you at the opening on Friday.

Saturday at the Art LA and LA Art Fairs

The two LA International Art Fairs in Santa Monica this weekend were night and day different, and seeing both in one day was sensory overload. Starting at Art LA, it was all contemporary work, about materials, Postmodern fracturing of anything and everything, and experimental techniques (e.g., painting on roofing slates that are laced together as an art book). There were also great paintings by several top-notch living artists (e.g., Tom La Duke of LA, Kim Dingle of NY, and Adrian Ghenie of Romania). However, my favorite artist discovery was Caetano de Almeida of Brazil, a 3rd or 4th generation Modernist with just a small Postmodernist tweak of fracturing here and there. Presented by the LA Kontainer Gallery were six of his semi-woven grid paintings on mylar (e.g., see photo) that were both formal and edgy, clearly hand-made without computer assistance, and with gorgeous color. He also had four smaller minimalist, geometric paintings so technically clean that the quirky tilts of the rectangles are almost not noticed. His $5K-20K prices were still out of reach for most of the dressed-down crowd.
Going next to the LA Art Fair, it was big-time everything. Twice as many cars, people, galleries, wine bars, dealers, freebies and elbows. Lots of traditional art (e.g., California plein air, European Impressionism and Modernism, yesterday’s quality painters and today’s name artists), with sticker shock prices (nothing overtly over $1M). Something for each taste, eye candy all over, and lots of red dots on the labels. This year also added the LA Prints Show that was so jammed with beautiful works, it was difficult to leave without being tempted. So if you love art and cannot make it this year to all the other international art fairs in Europe, Asia, NYC, etc., then these LA art fairs are a bargain and quite informative about what is in the art market these days. On Sunday, why not try an escape from a world recession or War on Terrorism?

SCA Summer Show Opportunity

SCA member Karen Schwager has arranged with Pat Sparkle for for an SCA summer exhibition at the Wells Fargo Bank in Laguna Beach. It will run from June through August, which coincides with the art tourism season in Laguna Beach. Planning for this show will begin at the Calafia show opening on Feb 13 and via E-Mail. Generally, the terms for operation will be the same as in past shows, as follows:

1. A Saturday opening during bank business hours
2. Open hours are the same as bank hours. Hopefully, we can post a sign outside and inside.
3. No requirement for gallery sitting the show. Bank security in effect.
4. A posted list of art works with prices and contact phone numbers
5. An SCA artist book with one-page formated image and art statement
6. Framed, ready to hang artwork. Space limitation about 36" x 36" max (within the wall wainscoting).
7. Limited pieces of sculpture provided with available pedestals
8. Desire high quality and socially acceptable public art only (bank acceptable standard).

This show possibly runs in parallel with our Chapman University show, so more discussion is needed for concensus of how to manage and staff and fill two shows, or reschedule the Chapman show. Should we have one themed show and one members open show? Coordination meeting to be arranged in April. Now we invite those interested in showing and candidate show names from members. Gallery C is pleased to present 8 Under 28, a survey of eight important young Los Angeles-based artists. Many young artists are turning their backs on five decades of grandfather’s Pop Art and the aging pointlessness of Post-Modernism. These eight locals lead a generational shift with an art that embraces reckless certainty and conceptual purposefulness. Their work, in a variety of media, abandons both the tidy illustrations of academic theory and the cult of the well-made fetish object. 8 Under 28 is an affirmative leap away from two previous generations of artists serving the calculations of image-driven art styles and machinations of an art world out-of touch with life itself.
About the 8 Artists:
Erin Dunn subverts slacker art in her monumental doodles that border on the majestic.
Sarah Elise pulls photography back into the physical with hands-on, non-digital Polaroids depicting a contemporary, yet timeless cool Americana.
Asad Faulwell pastiches remnants of opposing cultures to create new dialogues beyond the conventions of good/bad, right/wrong that pass for political and aesthetic discourse these days.
Omar Gallegos has mastered a timeless Neo-Latin realism that is equal parts visits to cathedrals and circuses.
Stephanie Mercado populates an eerie, dramatic backdrop with characters as surreal as they are exquisitely illustrated.
Ian E. Pines paints bold abstractions that are defiantly anti-iconic yet paradoxically effuse optimism for art.
Arturo Ernesto Romo-Santillano is a sophisticated provocateur whose art critiques the nature of critical inquiry itself with a dry, unnerving humor.
Lorrie Waldie creates environments and installations that balance the ephemeral (fleeting) with the evocative (collectible).
Gallery C Exhibition Director Mat Gleason has concluded, “The search for a radical medium has inhibited the growth of art. When it comes to fine art, the medium is definitely NOT the message. One of the possible uses of this SCA blog site is soliciting feedback/critiques on your artwork in progress. Rather than waiting for a monthly meeting or for a friend to drop by, consider posting a digital image of one of your works and requesting constructive critiques from SCA members. Maybe you are not so sure if your piece is finished/balanced/dynamic/harmonious or whatever. So you write a paragraph that describes your intent, and what kind of comments and feedback that you would like. This is a semi-public space, but think of the value to your personal growth to get a broad set of collective comments.

To illustrate this practice, here is one of my paintings in work, and I invite your comments via blog comments or by E-Mail if you would like to indulge in larger remarks. Titled "Night Court #1", it is a night landscape that pushes towards a geometric abstraction. The lights are contributed by sodium (yellow) and halogen (cool white) lights on a wall of a handball court. Comments are requested concerning any aspect of the painting. I am an expressive brush painter, and this painting has started a series of paintings that are now shown on my website.

Planning and scheduling for the SCA Calafia Art Show in February:

Show Title: "WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?"

1. February 10, Sunday, receive art at the gallery from 12:00 noon to 1:30PM. Owner Ann Andreas says she will hang the art that day. Bring ready to hang work. Also bring entry fee of $10 and artwork summary information printed on paper or card:

-Title, Artist Name, Medium, Size, Year, Price
2. February 13, Wednesday, our exhibit opening party will be from 6:00 to 9:00PM. Lynn Morgan will direct of hospitality, with participating members bringing finger foods.
3. Gallery hours: Mon-Fri, 11am to 3pm (same as for the Green Parrot Cafe).
4. The exhibit will close on Friday, March 14, and art pick up on Saturday,March 15, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon.
5. If any piece is sold, the artist will receive 60% with the balance to Calafia, so price your work accordingly.
6. All members, with family and friends are welcome to the opening.
7. Show post card announcements will be distributed at the SCA January 15 meeting.

About Face – Portraiture Now

What could be more uncool in today’s art world than a portraiture show? LBMA answers with a large show of large and small works, with gems in many media. These are the new old masters, with drawing and painting skills that emulate and rival the greats of the past.
The stated goals are: to capture a likeness, to show the non-stereotypical, and to probe the psyche. If you still treasure these values in art in the digital age, then this is the show for you. What else is drawing and painting about in this post-Postmodern era?
“About Face” works on the first floor are works after 2000, and so much more engaging than the permanent collection in “Picturing Identity” on the second floor. In many ways the second floor collection is more didactic and more radical in style, but also so dated in its ages. The newer work has power, seduction, a blend of the analytical and the holistic. Some to hate, lots to admire, a few with magic to inspire. Recommendation: Try a local afternoon tour with art friends, taking in the LBMA, MOLAA and the UAM at CSULB, all free on Fridays.

SCA Artist Membership Welcoming

The Next SCA Artist Membership Welcoming will be held January 15th, 2008, at the Jan meeting.

Bring artwork if possible. SCA plays a central role in the Orange County arts community by providing local artists and the public with exceptional exhibitions and programs, as well as a forum for exchange and education through lectures, workshops and networking opportunities. SCA serves a cross section of artists of all mediums, career levels and socio-economic backgrounds. By supporting the emerging talent at the onset of their career path, we hope to influence all the cultural stakeholder groups in OC and contribute to the cultural identity of our community. SCA is pledged to providing emerging artists with the experience, education and exposure needed to create and sustain a career in the arts. Membership screenings are held regularly at SCA meetings.

Here are the specifics:Next Orientation Tuesday, January 15, 7-9pm

Location to be provided on the SCA website soon.

Applicants must be social and may provide or talk about some art materials during the Membership meeting:

1. Two (2) original pieces of artwork created within the last 30 years.

Only once a year does LA have two international art fairs, and they both occur the same weekend in January (1/26-1/27), and only 4 miles apart in Santa Monica. The LA Art Fair at the Barker Hanger (see below) is for historical, modern and contemporary art, plus prints this year. The Art LA Fair at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium (at Pico and Main Sts) is for contemporary art. Anyone interested in a group for Saturday, 1/26/2008, starting at the Art LA show? If so, then form a car pool with SCA members and friends from your area of Orange Co. (Note: about $20 entry for each). Lunch and coffees available at each place. CAL JOINS SCA

Our long time friend and husband of Marilyn Todd, Cal Todd is joining SCA. Many already know Cal from his attendance and support at meetings and exhibitions with Marilyn. Although he is not yet persuaded that he has artistic leanings, he is volunteering his support as a deputy to the VP and P in organizational activities. For instance, he will make initial contacts with applicants, E-Mail them the membership list, and recommend contacts with members working in the same media. So members are asked to participate also to help SCA grow.

Cal is also a nautical enthusiast and volunteers as a sailor with a Coast Guard group and serves on a research ship for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. He is providing his organizational skills there as well. Welcome aboard, Cal.

Marilyn Ellis Exhibition at Aliso Viejo Library

Marilyn Ellis shows her recent Art work at the Aliso Viejo Library, 1 Journey Ave., Aliso Viejo, CA 92656 starting the last week of November 2007 through February 2008. Her brightly colored abstractions are an interesting contrast to the light contemporary interior architecture of architect Bryan Jeannette. Marilyn has worked on her interpretation of the String Theory in physics, where the string has replaced the atom, to make her space, color and line in Art extremely vibrant. In his book, "The Elegant Universe", Physicist Brian Greene unites Art, Music and Physics.

This is the second time Marilyn has shown in this library, which is an architectural gem in itself. It was very pleasant that Marilyn Todd, the curator, invited her to show again. The first time was with Bart Palisi, not long after the building was constructed around 1997. Cal Todd was kind enough to hang the work. He said it was the first time the librarian had asked him to put one of the paintings just in front of her desk so that she could look at it.

I RETURNED LATE LAST NIGHT FROM AN EXCITING WEEK IN SAN MIGUEL ALLENDE MX WHERE THE TOWN CELEBRATED DIA DE LAS MUERTOS. I'D RECOMMEND THE TRIP TO ANYONE WHO HAS AN INTEREST IN "MOCKING DEATH" AS THE MEXICANS DO, WITH MUSIC, JOY, ART AND FOOD. I WAS ABLE TO STUDY A PRIVATE COLLECTION OF FRIDA KAHLO PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, LETTERS, RECIPES, SHORT STORIES, MEDICAL DRAWINGS AND PERSONAL BELONGINGS. THE COLLECTION IS PRESENTLY BEING AUTHENTICATED AND ARCHIVED. A CATALOGUE WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I WAS OVERWHELMED WITH THE DEEP, PERSONAL NATURE OF THESE KAHLO WORKS. MANY WERE PAINTED SPECIFICALLY FOR DIEGO. I ALSO HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF OBSERVING A PRINTMAKING SEMINAR AT THE BELLAS ARTES. I LEARNED TWO NEW PROCESSES BY WATCHING THESE TALENTED PRINTMAKERS IN ACTION.

Just to supplement the SCA e-mail of Oct. 30 I thought I would use my first blog as a supplement of information on the "Birth of the Cool" show at OCMA. By coincidence I received a complementary issue of Art Ltd. a few days ago. There are several very good articles on the current show at OCMA, one being written by the Curator, Elizabeth Armstrong, "The Square and the Cool" which is from the OCMA catalog. Also 0f interest is the article "Abstract Classicism in Retrospect" by writer, curator Peter Selz and "The Illusionist" about Tony DeLap, UCI former Art Prof and resident of CdM. Docents have been fortunate to see his studio there. My next blog will probably be on my work which will show through Curator, Marilyn Todd, at the Aliso Viejo Library.

Elegantly simple in form, yet complex in construction, Cat Chow's labor-intensive work, which began as a series of garments, is fascinating for its intricacy and use of common materials in unexpected ways. She has exhibited in numerous design, art and contemporary craft shows, most notably at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, New Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum at F.I.T. in New York. She was recently awarded an Urban Artist Initiative Grant from New York City and has been nominated for the Fashion Design Award of Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in 2007. Cat Chow currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Positive suggestions were flying around the room. Later, Eileen and I discussed our feelings of OPTIMISM about SCA's future. The involvement of the members last night gave us hope that SCA will not only remain intact but also evolve into a more vibrant organization.

I am also a member of a mosaic forum called MAO MosaicArtistsOrg a Yahoo group. It is really worth it to communicate with other artists and share our thoughts and experience. I'm glad that SCA artists can now get in touch in an easy and convenient way.

The MAO forum surprised me on August 6th and posted my artwork that was in SCA Chapman show on their home page. I was so happy. This forum have 3691 members from all over the globe.
