New SCA Publicity Chairperson for 2008

Our new SCA member, Marie Martin, has volunteered to chair our SCA publicity activities. Many thanks, Marie, and thanks also for hosting our January planning meeting at your studio. Besides Marie's talents as a painter and her enthusiasm for this position, she draws on her past corporate experience in public relations. SCA may not have a comparable budget for this activity, but if it generates greater attendance at our art shows and possible art reviews in the media, then we have lots of praise for her efforts. And if you have a new idea for publicity, contact Marie Martin at martin.art@mac.com

Thanks Marie for getting involves and contributing your time. Great news. Why don't we raise fees for shows so we can have additional money for PR?

Thank you for the encouragement and kind words!

"True" public relations is ideally a function of the party desiring publicity having good relationships with editors of key publications of interest. Also, important are mailings to large, manicured lists of likely targets, whether or not special relationships exist. Money should (theoretically) not change hands in these activities. Neither of these approaches will require much financing, other than perhaps snail-mailing; however, so much of our world is internet-driven these days, that mailing costs should be minimal.

However, advertising is another kettle of fish. There are always plenty of ways to spend money on advertising for such things as magazine ads and marketing materials.

There is another in-between avenue. That is the world of special shows, fundraisers, "meet the editor" events, etc. Not true PR; not exactly classic advertising either, but provides plenty of "opportunities" to spend money.

If strategies where financing is required are desirable to members, perhaps this should be discussed at a meeting?

These are all good things to think about, and I thank you for bringing up the idea of generating a little cash flow to support efforts to raise SCA's public profile.

Clearly SCA now has a competent person who can develop a strong PR program. We are so fortunate to have you as a member. Yes, I think it is a good idea to bring your very important points up at the next meeting.
